Media Moves

I am really not sure what I want to focus on for my project. I know I am interested in being a production assistant. The position requires support of a team and getting things done.

My project is a work in progress right now. I could go in any direction.

Internships

I started to look at CUNY’s page for internships and was side tracked. I never got to finish what I started. I wanted to apply for a few different internships. The requirements for different internships vary. I got a email about an internship with MediaMKRS. They partner with NYC Mayor’s office of Media and Entertainment, the City University of New York, Reel Works, media companies and unions to train, credential and prepare talented New Yorker for careers in media and entertainment. The info session was Oct. 27  info@mediamkrs.org.

I also filled out an application for internships at Warner media this is the link www.warnerbroscareers.com/find-jobs/?179383BR.

Final Project Plan + Proposal

Being that I am taking both Final Project and Portfolio Design courses during this semester, I was able to get a head start over the summer. A proposal, in slide form, was required to get into the Final project course. Therefore, I was able to think about what kind of project I wanted to create for my last hoorah.
I wanted to do something for a special client of mine, my mother. She has always given me smaller projects to complete for her events such as flyers and invitations. Therefore, recreating a website for her business is the perfect opportunity to showcase my web skills and to expand her business platform. It seems like a win/win to me and doing it for my mother made it personal and special.
ORIGINAL PROPOSAL
Above is the link to the original slide and during todays I decided to share it with my group members so they can see what I have done and learn from it. I had to update my “Research” slide and make it more specific after learning about important it is to reaching your goal. In this slide, my research is based off of the final layout inspiration compared to the actual process to achieve that certain lay out.
But my final project has been going well so far and I am on track based off of the semester timeline I gave myself. I do believe that I bit off more than I can chew by trying to complete 5 pages for this project, so I am leaning towards 3 pages. But these 3 pages will be planned out well and efficiently.

week 6 – The pitch

I’m so surprised how relaxing this week was, maybe because we’re nearing the end or having a goal in a vision that I want to do but what I do know is that my project proposal for my podcast will be sweet. I can feel it.

But let me slow down because I only have currently slid detailing what my plan is. After consulting with Dan and Jonathan about their project and them flushing out my ideas more, I know I have a long way to go, but I feel like I’m making progress in a weird way progress.

I think the only worry I have is me actually executing it. Still, so far, it’s looking good to get an idea of what my podcast will be. Basically, it’s going to be about video games and using memes to lighten the mood.

Is a quick little preview of my amazing podcast (no, that’s not the official name, and I will be updating it with more information, so stay tuned)

Operation: Find an Internship

The last time CT 399 class met, we were assigned to practice our researching skills to find some internship opportunities. Although I did find a few that interested me on LinkedIn, most of them were looking for at least 1-3 years of working experience in the animation field (Surprise… Surprise).

Luckily, I have already landed an internship so I’m confident that I can quickly stock up on some of that working experience my future employers are asking for.

I first learned about CUNY Cultural Corps through a promotional email Michael had sent out to CT students who were in need of finding an internship to complete the CT 490-Intership course. After reading the email, I quickly brushed up my resume & portfolio website and then applied to the program. I can’t tell you exactly what I did to get accepted because I really don’t know. I’m not a high achieving 3.0 GPA student so I know damn well my very low 2 point something GPA was not a key factor. However, I can tell you about the process, my personal experience and some tips I’ve learned so far because I’m still in the hiring/orientation process and have not officially started working for a cultural institution yet.

I applied to the program on August 27, ten days before the Sept. 6th deadline. The application was similar to when you’re apply to college because you had to write an 400 word response on “What does a cultural institution mean to you” or something similar, I don’t remember the question word for word.

Soon after the Aug. 27th submission, got a request for an online group interview on September 4th. The Sept. 4th interview date threw me off guard because it means hiring managers pick candidates way before the actual application deadline. So one tip I can give is try to apply to any job/internship as soon as you feel ready, don’t wait till the deadline.

The online group interview was interesting. There were about 30-50 CUNY students in the group interview via Zoom. The main goal of the group interview, in my opinion, was to test how well you work with others and how you react under pressure because the interviewer split us into groups and we had 15 minutes to do a google slides presentation on a topic related to current events. Furthermore, the group members were each responsible for a role such as researcher & etc., and had to work collaboratively to create a final presentation. Throughout the whole interview and the miniature groups we were split in, each of us were being monitored and evaluated on our leadership, teamwork, and overall attitude. We couldn’t see those who where monitoring us but we were told they were “evaluating everything we are doing”. So I guess, another tip is to always present your best self in an online interview as you would in a normal face to face interview. It’s common sense but people sometime assume the online format can be more laid back than the face to face interview.

To keep this post short, I will summarize the process after I passed the interview process and was official a member of the program. After the interview, we were assigned to attended 3 mandatory workshops and orientations to get us prepared for working at which ever worksite we would end up with after interviewing with the companies. The workshops span over a two month period. The workshops were also helpful as they thought you resume building, what to expect in an interview, and working remotely. However, one negative I can say is that this program is not suitable for someone with a busy schedule because you had to attend the workshops and the Job fair at whatever day and time it was schedule, which means you had to miss class or call in sick if you are employed. Luckily, this is my last semester (only one full day of classes) and I’m unemployed, so I pretty much stay home all day and never have schedule conflicts. Other than that, I recommend the program. It’s a great learning experience and will give you a head start in your career of interest. Lastly, one last tip is just apply to a job you’re interested in, you never know. I really didn’t think I would had been accepted because my GPA is so low, a senior, and have never participated in any school clubs or exudes any school spirit.

The worksite I will be working for is called The Museum of Chinese in America and I’ll be a Graphic Design intern. I’m excited because I plan to have a career in both Animation and Graphic design. This internship will definitely help with gaining those skills and experiences my future employers are asking for. More importantly, I can use this internship to freaking graduate already! It’s been a long, stressful, but rewarding five years…….

Internship

Researching for internships in the last class, I figured it would be difficult to find something. Since I don’t have a lot of experience under my belt with general knowledge of things. I wish I could have done more back then, but I know there’s nothing I can do to change the past. I am in the present and have to look forward to the future. When I was younger I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be at all, but when a few years ago I started watching short films on YouTube from creators I realized I wanted to do something like that. That is when I wanted to become a production producer. I know it’s not an easy task and I still have a lot to learn, but everyone has to start somewhere.

During the class, I managed to find two different companies looking for interns for video production. The first one “Daybreaker” seems to do a lot of video shoots about people’s expressions which I happen to like about, people who express themselves in unique ways. The other one “Cinqua” is about filming documentaries which I am also interested in. Both don’t seem to require a lot like other internships so if anyone is interested I would suggest taking a look at it as well.

Internship…. fail

I am so bummed that I was not able to get an internship in time for this semester. COVID is to blame because the internships I wanted to apply to were “in person” workshops and a majority of those were cancelled. It was difficult finding an online internship because most of their deadlines had already passed. I cannot put all the blame on COVID because I am definitely a huge procrastinator; and a procrastinator in a pandemic screams “last minute”.
Another bummer this year was that the workplace I have always dreamed about working in has temporarily shutdown due to this pandemic. I feel like I could have fulfilled the graphic design needs for this company because of our similar design styles. Bold font and bright colors are what we HAD in common and I know I would have been fit for this company.
My dream company that shutdown is :
WeWork | WeWork HQ, 115 W 18th St. New York, NY 10011 | (646) 389-3922 |
At WeWork I could interpret various types of content information and transform them into visually pleasing content for the web and social media.
Other companies I’ve researched are:
Microsoft | New York, NY| I would use my UX Design skills for strategy development to intrigue customers

Been there, Done that

When we started talking about Internships in class, my teacher mode immediately turned on. I somehow managed to get my internship out of the way during the Spring 2020 semester (which wasn’t the best way because I had to shortcut my internship halfway because of the panoramic) and I wanted to share my tricks and tips on how to get an internship (especially a virtual one) during these times. I managed to have a 4-month social media/communications internship with the lovely organization I call home. Urban Word NYC is the leading literary arts organization in New York City. They champion the NYC Youth poet Laureate Program, the Annual NYC Poetry Slam held at the Apollo, and many more iconic events. My main goal with the internship was to get a part-time job (which they couldn’t provide because of the pandemic) but I was able to obtain some really good connects in various fields of the Industry.

Now the question is, What is your process? One of the things that I learned at urban Word NYC is the importance of networking. We all know that Linkedin is “The Facebook for adults” and the powerhouse of networking. I have a process I love to call “Networking Stalking’ which really helped me through the process of finding jobs and more specifically interviews for internships for the Summer and Fall of 2020 (not for school but for experience). Firstly, you have to look up the company that you want to work for. Find their list of employees in the department that you want to work for. Linkedin’s technology allows individuals and companies to sync up which make them easier to find. Once you find someone who looks interesting, you connect with them, and look at the companies they used to work for, and connect with people att thier old job. This puts you higher on their list, causing more and more people to connect with you. You can do with with several people.Once you do this long enough, you have a spider web of connections in different places of people doing the same job that you want to do. You are able to keep tabs/updates, find mutual people and become a familair face whenever you’re ready to ask for an interview or sending a message just to introduce yourself. As you know you probably won’t talk to the 300 people you connected with over time, but you would have a better understanding of tthe places tthat you can get into.

While there are many ways to get into the field, this is the way that I found most successful. I appreciated my method so much, that I went back on Linkedin and found a company that is the father of a big company that I want to work for. I want to be able to use the techniques I learned in this class to get an interview with someone in the company hopefully looking to hire by next year! I’ll let you know how it goes.

Realizing my Goals

when I was 5 years old I wanted to be a doctor, at age 11 decided to be a teacher, at age 15 wanted to be an entrepreneur, at age 18 an accountant and at 20 I wanted to be in the media production field. Now considering my future job I’m thinking about being in video editing. 90% of my time I spend watching some sort of video whether it is a TV show or a movie, this will be an adventure from seeing what kind of work happens that I spend most of my time in.

To find a job in editing Prof. Smith recommended me to watch the end credits and look at their path of work, find their assistants and see what projects they are doing and try to reach out to them.

Thinking about what am I going to do after college kind of scares me. It makes me think that what if I’m not creative enough, what if no one hires me, what am I going to do when I do have a job, it makes me doubt myself. Now for me, I have to keep confidence in me, keep making connections, and keep the focus on my ultimate goal.

Thank you for reading.

Internship Research

I have heard so much positive and negative about internships that now I’m actually scared. I tend to procrastinate more than I should so I always end up missing deadline but for my internship, I promised myself I wouldn’t procrastinate and I have already looked into some after tried to apply for them but in the end, was stopped for a “portfolio” which I don’t have yet. here is a link the company is called hydrant and the position is as a video production and animation intern if anyone has a portfolio already and can apply for the position.
Also, I have found the PSC Work-Study internship they have positions in motion graphics and I’m planning to apply for it right after midterm.
