Final Reflection

This is my reflection for CT399 Portfolio class. In this class we reflected on what we have learned and where our future focus is after college. During this class we would discuss about the internship process and who we consider a proper future peer that can help benefit us in our near future.

For my peer future research I was a little confused at first on who I should look for. My focus is TV Production so I started looking for people who are producers or assistant producers. I started to focus on reality television. I choose the Jersey Shore at first and noticed this isn’t what I wanted to focus on for my future peer. Right now I do event photography and wanted to find somebody in New York that I can connect with as my future peer. I had to find somebody who wasn’t up there in the photography industry, but still big and has good work. I picked Jamielevinephotography who is a wedding and event photographer. She is located in manhattan and has a well organized website that show cases her work. This photographer was a perfect fit for a future peer because we both has the similar interest in photography.

During my time in CT399 we discussed internships that connect with our future peer goals. I learned that picking an internship isn’t easy and does take effort to get in. Looking for an internship we need relevant information like address, phone number, and email/ or relevant individuals. We had to figure out a list of activities that we would exist in that work place to help guide us towards the right internship. In the internship process it isn’t just applying to companies on different websites; it’s contacting the company personally and making yourself noticed. Following up on our internship application is a must to help us get the internship. Having experience is extremely important when we graduate college. Job look not only on your school experience, but hands on experience with companies other than school.

During this class I learned a lot on what I really wanted to focus on when I graduate. Now I know what internships I want to focus on. I started off looking for TV production future peers and internships, to looking at event photographers and internships. I am happy at how I progressed through out this semester in CT399. This class is the reason I now what I want to focus on for my career.

Response for Dec 4.

At first it was hard for me to pick a future peer. I struggled because I want to do a bunch of things, but I needed to narrow it down to the ones I am best at. I started to look for photographers because that is what I have been doing as a side job. I do event photography and on occasions I do portrait photography. I started to look for a future peer around me that also does event photography. I found a young women on Instagram under Jamielevinephotography. She has 4,743 followers and is based in New York. She does wedding photography and maternity photography. I mostly see wedding photography. Her website is www.jamielevinphotography.com . This is somebody I can see as a future peer.

big goal

As I have learned about how to look for a Website that has ideas for future peer or Jobs. I have look into may different ones that could be useful to create my own website that would bring company that are interested into. It is important to have many different things on your website such as Blog, your experience with Portfolio Artifacts, and a social media. As my group told me that if your doing a YouTube it is important to have followers to follow your video and how they are interested.

Peer Research

It was surprisingly harder than I thought to find an artist with a website. I searched and searched and all I could find was a lot of landing pages. That is very popular in the artist community and is just a third party website allowing you to post links to each of your preferred content distributors. I feel as if websites aren’t as beneficial to certain fields or it’s just not needed as much unless you’re selling merch. Definitely, something to think about as far as cost-benefit.

Week 8- The Procrastinator

I am ready to get started on my portfolio project I have my topics for the blog and the podcast ready, my friends are all ready to record and I already have an idea of how long the video is going to be the only problem is I’m procrastinating/being lazy way too much.

And before you say “come on jahi this is pretty simple this is something you’re really passionate about so we shouldn’t be a problem” I know but it doesn’t help that due to the corona I am missing the school environment because usually I get things done way before the due date but without that school environment I feel very sluggish

That being said this weekend I should have not only new sets of blogs but also the first episode of The podcast which I’m actually extremely excited to do (so as long as I get it done)

But with all that being said, I did look up Nicole Hill’s website called Black TARDIS for the big goal digital present from my future pair. I love how very organized it is and that it has a contact page. It also has Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram social media account. The only problem I have with the site is that it’s not functional because some of the links are broken, so she would need to fix that. Luckily I know what design. Hence, she needs help. I would definitely love to work on it.

I also looked up a little bit of a bigger YouTuber by the name of black Hokage and his website giupdate.tv is kind of my vision of how I want my podcast page to be in the future I love how it has a feed if you want to find out what he and his friends are doing you can scroll down and see what they’re up to. The Creator page links all the member’s social media links and a little background history of them. They have an about me page that is your typical about me page. They have a merchandising page that sends you to some merchandising and a sponsor page that gives you a discount on everything and contact to talk to them personally for any business opportunities.

But overall these are some of the people that make me realize I need to get out of this lazy stage and get started because if they making things happen I should be able to as well.

I can see it !

The peer that I researched today is Devon Halliday. She is an assistant editor for the show Blue Bloods. While looking at her linkedin page, I came across her resume. With every job she moved on to, she acquired new skills, fostering her talents and slowly making her way to her ideal workplace.

Observing her linkedin revealed a few facts to me. 1.) where there’s a will, there’s a way. 2.) you must put in effort, nothing is handed to you. There are more lessons I learned but I plan to implement them. Most importantly, I learned that I must have faith in myself. I want to work as a camera operator and develop new skills, I even want to shoot music videos, coming up with concepts and ideas .

Digital Presence

Digital Presence    12/4/2020

I searched Kaya Tone; she is a Production Assistant in NYC.  I admire her because she is in the field that I am interested in and she has uprooted herself from where she grew up in Colorado.  She traveled to the big city to pursue her dreams.  I have attached content from her digital presence she is on LinkedIn.  She also has a You tube channel that showcases all her talents.  She attended New York University where she received her Bachelors in Cinematography and Film / Video Production.

Kaya is one of my future peers I have reached out to her weeks back.  I didn’t hear anything from her until just recently.  I was happy to hear from her.  I didn’t bombard her with questions.  I only acknowledged her acceptance of my connection and thanked her.

I think if she could do it so can I.

I have registered with Made in NY. They train people to work in the media industry as Production Assistants.  [email protected]

OIN USING YOUR TELEPHONE:

Call-in using your cell phone.

Dial 646-558-8656 (New York Region). Enter Meeting ID 307 555 9355; press #. No participant ID needed; press #.

Please note, your attendance is required in order to submit an application.

If for any reason, you can’t make it, info sessions are held every Monday at 1pm, except for holidays.

Zoom link & Meeting ID will remain the same.

I am hopeful they will call me. They did ask certain questions that would interfere with working. They wanted to know if I was a student and also if I was a resident of NYCHA. This led me to believe people that live in NYCHA they would get first preference. Also if you are a student they would not pick you because you are a student and it would interfere with working.

The “big goal” digital presence

You have identified model individuals through the “future peers” assignment that are in a position that is of interest to you. And now it’s time to make choices about what you should present and where you should present them.

Research and Document

Pick one or two presences and break down and organize all the types of information included in the “future peer’s” presence(s).Here are some of the types of things you might consider defining depending on the individual’s presence.

  1. A personal domain
    1. Site design and platform? Your own HTML, WordPress install, Social Media home?
    2. Blog?
  2. Resume Linkedn or on another site.
  3. Contact methods
  4. Portfolio Artifacts
    1. Titles
    2. Description of project
    3. Description of contribution
    4. Media embeds – Videos, Photos, Screenshots, etc.
    5. Links
  5. Process/Skills/Talents – lists and/or descriptions, broken into categories or a single paragraph.
  6. References – mentions, accolades, articles about you.
  7. Bios – formal, anecdotal, skill driven, personal, personal photo or not
  8. Social Media Links – personal and/or professional

After breaking down what a “future peer” has chosen to present, define what you will present. Collect and document what you have and what you will need.

Submit a link or screenshot

Submit URLs to digital profiles in the comments below if it’s a publicly accessible site. Or take screenshots of relevant parts of a profile and submit them to the Discord portfolio chat.

Peer Report

As usual, we’ll discuss what you’ve worked on, but also below is a running list of links to all sorts of profiles identified by students in the past. I will add others shared in the peer report. Sorry about any link rot.

Email & Resume & Cover Letter

The last class was about writing an email inquiry. That is an important part of getting into a job or internship that you want. Also it is important to know how to write a respectable and professional email.

For resumes it is important that the resume and cover letter is related to the job you are applying to. The resume should have relevant experience connecting with the job applying for. The cover letter is always helpful when trying to get accepted for the position. Most positions require a cover letter. In a cover letter should be brief, but well explained about your experience and knowledge towards the job

Email Inquiry

The last class was about writing an email inquiry. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure how this was helpful to us, I did find it weird writing to someone who might not even respond back. After going through the exercise, I can see how it’s beneficial for us. It helps us communicate and connect with people that have experience and have a similar field study to us. To me, this sounds like you are looking for a mentor to help guide you with your questions or concerns to help improve yourself.

While writing the email, I wasn’t really sure what to write while using the sample. I did my best to write something that was praising the person as well as get to the point in what I contacted them for. Professor Michael gave some great advice on improving the email by telling me to be more specific in which of the work this person has done that interested me the most. This is so I am not vague about the information I am writing about. The class helped informed me about the importance of writing an email inquiry. I will put what I’ve learned to good use in the future.
